The Dove Street Inn, Ipswich, is quite simply the best real ale pub around. Karen and Ady run a nationally celebrated free house, which in 2008 won the CAMRA award for the best real ale pub in Suffolk. This is just one of a string of awards won by this energetic couple and their staff, and the pub continues to be a hub of the community being the meeting place for numerous clubs and societies.
This busy friendly pub welcomes dogs on a lead in the main bars, the newly constructed covered patio, and outside seating areas. Water bowls, and even a hose for cleaning mucky pups, are available as you enter the pub from the rear patio area. As with many pubs the evenings during the weekend can get very busy, so doggy visitors may be best off if they are prepared for a seat outside on those nights. At quieter times Fynn, the pubs own Springer spaniel, takes his place in the bar; keeping an eye on his owners at their work.
Perhaps the greatest feature of the Dove is variety; starting with the drinks the pub maintains a changing selection of 20 real ales, a wide range of foreign beers and an excellent selection of fruit wines. Very reasonably priced food is available all day, with BBQ burgers, served with salad, onions and cheese, starting at around £3.50, and hearty simple mains averaging about £6.
The building itself is a wonderful mixture of old and new, with the nooks and crannies of the old house complimented by the architectural boldness and light offered by the new patio extension. Situated in an area of Ipswich long occupied by artisans and specialist small businesses, Karen and Ady are now embarking on a new venture of the Dove Street Brewery. Just across the road from the main pub, this is a sure sign of the vitality and enthusiasm the owners have for the business of beer.
