This is the closest good dog walk to The Garland Pub; it's about a ten minute walk away. To walk to the common you have to cross the main Woodbridge Road or you can drive between the two, as there are a small number of parking spots on the roads leading into the common itself.
Rushmere Common offers a unique community space right in the middle of the north east of Ipswich. Historically true common land the open space is now owned in Trust, which shares the use of the common with the Rushmere Golf Club. For most of the year there are generally a few golfers about, but it is well worth it. The wild heath land, filled with flowering scented gorse and gentle, wooded slopes make for a great dog walk. Thankfully the golfers are used to dogs running across their paths; and some of them must have the patience of a saint the number of times our guys do it.
The common offers safe circular walks where dogs are free to be let off their leads. There are no gates to the common so walkers can come anytime. Free poo bags and accessible dog bins are to be found around the walk, and walkers should respect the varied use of the space by using them at all times.
In our view the best time to come is in the winter snow. With golfers tucked up in the club house the common offers an oasis of frosty paths and quiet spaces. Our guys can’t get enough and give you that look when its time to go – lets go round again. And being the dog lovers we are, we often do.
