The Ship Inn at Levington is a true English countryside pub, with great charm and a long-standing reputation for great food. Levington is just 4 miles east of Ipswich, or 10 minutes by car, and is the very picture of a quintessential English village.
The Ship is a Suffolk Adnams pub where the evening menu is changed every day and locally sourced produce features highly. Dining here is a treat, with mains averaging at £11 per head, and in addition to the real ales the pub offers a really strong wine list. Like all popular pubs, Friday and Saturday nights are the busiest and at these times inside seating may be at a premium.
However, since taking over the pub in early 2010 the new management have actively adopted a new Dog Friendly policy, and are themselves the proud owners of two chocolate Labradors. The clouded antique brass sign saying “no dogs, no children” remains on the main bar door; but dogs are now welcomed to the main bar, where visitors can also enjoy a meal. Outside the pub, dog water bowls are available. And to the rear of the pub is a well-made patio area with “proper” tables and chairs, should you wish to dine outside.
Access to great dog walking can be found opposite the pub, via a public footpath that leads directly to the start of the Suffolk Coastal Path and Nacton Village picnic site. Or you can take a short drive back towards Ipswich to enjoy the woodland pleasures of Orwell Country Park.
