Having made an extensive tour of Bury St Edmunds that morning hubby, dogs, and I set of in search of a hearty Sunday lunch to revive the spirits and rest the bones. We’d come a bit unstuck in trying to find a real dog friendly pub in the town so we thought we’d take a trip out to Coney Weston to enjoy the delights of a pub with a long standing dog friendly reputation, The Swan Inn.
As we stepped from our car on a baking summer’s day, you can imagine our delight as we found the dogs were made welcome straight away with directions to the water bowls. The landlord has only taken over recently and she is keen to keep the dog friendly reputation alive. Dogs are welcome inside both front facing bars and outside, where to the front of the pub is a range of tables and seating spots. The Swan is a Greene King pub and with its Edwardian brick exterior feels strangely reminiscent of railway stations, steam trains and such, for a pub so squarely set in the countryside. Similarly, the bars are decorated with photos and curiosities collected over the ages and the pub retains a gratifying sense of being a real hub for the community.
The Sunday roasts were equally real and filling, fresh home-cooked food in generous portions, served politely and promptly. Soon all four of us were feeling better for our rest stop.
Taking a chance whilst being guided by technology, rather than experience, can have its pitfalls and future visitors to this great pub should be aware that the fact that the address is "Coney Weston, Bury St Edmunds, IP31 1DN" should not be read as an indication that the pub is near to Bury. In fact, the pub is nearer to Thetford and the north Suffolk / Norfolk boundary, and is some 12 miles from Bury.
The pub offers easy access to some great walks as just to the west is the start of Peddars Way
, a famous ramblers trail which has existed since roman times and which extends all the way through Norfolk to the coast. The walk starts in Knettishall Heath Country Park
, where in summer locals take advantage of bathing in the lake. Sadly, for our water loving dogs we decided it was time to head home, but having visited and got a grasp of the delights of the area we will definitely be coming out this way again.
