The White Hart in Aldeburgh has earned the prestigious award of being another "real" pub in hubby’s estimation. Owned by Adnams, this dog-friendly pub is set just off the sea front in the south of the town and is definitely one of Suffolk’s most unusual watering holes.
The pub consists of a long single room, which looks like a chapel, with a vaulted roofed and stained glass windows set high around the room and a wood panelled interior. In fact, the origins of the building are naughtier than they first appear, as this was in fact the billiard room of the original pub and stepping outside you can see next-door that the main building has been converted into a house. Singular as it is, the room inside feels spacious and the tide of customers coming and going never seems to overwhelm the space available. However, the quirkiness extends into the pub rules with a 50p tax payable for anyone whose mobile phone goes off – this tax making up the coffers of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution collecting box. Whether this is a consequence of the space or the landlord’s own views we never truly got to the bottom of.
Children are not allowed in the bar but we are pleased to say that dogs are allowed everywhere and at all times of the day. At the time of our visit, in addition to our two, we counted three dogs inside and two more on the pavement benches out front. To the rear of the pub is an outside patio seating area with some of it under permanent cover. It was a warm dry day when we visited and sitting outside our stomachs began to rumble as the entrancing smell of fresh fish & chips wafted over the fence. Aldeburgh is renowned across the country for its fish and chips but it if you are looking for just a snack the pub offers a great selection of sandwiches at lunchtimes.
What really makes the White Hart special though is that of all the dog friendly pubs we have found so far, none has been able to offer up a local singing dog. On their occasional music nights, there is regular who performs acoustic guitar and to some surprise and great delight, his dog joins in. Now some people would travel a long way to see that, so the next time you are in Aldeburgh we recommend you pop your head in the White Hart and take some time to enjoy this unique and quirky dog friendly pub.
