Earl Soham Dog Friendly Walk

Our walk starts on the footpath running north, up and along the side of the Earl Soham Brewery. Chatting to the landlord in The Victoria he was able to recommend many pleasant walks in the area, and the one we chose was a simple 30 – 45 minutes circular walk around and about the wonderfully named "Windwhistle Farm". For those seeking more of a challenge, the network of footpaths can take you to Debenham in the west and to Framlingham in the east.

For the first 200 yards or so of our walk, the footpath led away through seemingly randomly scattered homes and into the fields beyond. The area around Earl Soham is quintessential rural Suffolk with low undulating hills and large, isolated, ancient farmsteads dotted amongst them. The farmland is mainly arable, which is great for dog walking. However, we did run into the occasional field side resident, and a succession of rabbits and pheasants piqued our two mutt’s interest as we went along.

About half way along our route, all of a sudden, we were delighted to see a deer leap from the edge of the field and bound gracefully into the woods on the far side. Kopek and Malli knew something was up but by the time they had worked out what it was the deer was long gone. This did not stop them running about in the woods like nutters for ten minutes or so. However, eventually they came out, with that exhausted happy "what was that" look on their faces.

Having had our fun we started to circle back and came back into the village by skirting along the edge of a tributary of the mighty River Deben. Walking back through the village homes once again, friendly villagers greeted us with a smile at the dogs. Unlike the folk dance to which this village lends it name, the "Earl Soham Slog", our day out was relaxed and fun. Moreover, with the thought of the hearth in The Victoria to greet you, it is a day out we will definitely do again when the colder weather starts to arrive.
