The long village of Rickinghall is another Suffolk gem just a stone’s throw off the A143. Comprising of three villages in all, Botesdale and the curiously named Rickinghall Inferior and Rickinghall Superior, the long street extends up and down gentle hills and reminds one of the more famous Suffolk beauty spots such as Long Melford. Stocked with a full gamut of historic houses Rickinghall excites the imagination, with expectations of a different historic figure popping out of every door as one makes one’s way along.

A fair way down the street and arguably into Botesdale you arrive at the The Bell Inn. The Bell has evidently been a focal point in the landscape for quite some time. You enter the middle courtyard by Bell Meadow and the layout and the name clearly evokes the true stabling inns of years gone by. Keeping up the tradition, The Inn has plenty of parking and patio seating to the front. Greeting us as we arrived was a clean dog bowl by the door and like many a good dog-friendly pub before, this is often the best indication that a warm welcome awaits.

The Bell Inn is truly dog friendly, allowing visitors with dogs’ access to all areas of the bars and restaurant. Dogs are also allowed in the hotel accommodation, which starting at £60 and including a four-poster bedroom in its range, is a treat I am keen to come back and try.

Whilst we sat and enjoyed our lunchtime drinks, we had lots of people come up to say hello and swap dog stories. Locals told us of their trials and tribulations with young Alsatians, the Chef has a husky, and the owners have the enjoyment of an even more curious combination of a Doberman and Yorkie. The Bell is a very good place to come out to; accessible, friendly and busy yet the Bell retains at all times a subtle background elegance drawn from its beautiful building and historic setting.

The Bell offers a great selection of food, beers and wine, from sandwiches and lite bites to intimate formal dining in the restaurant. The prices are very reasonable and the quality is excellent. Another visit to this cracking country inn is a must, if only to try the 8oz "not for feint hearted burger". Unlike Hubby, I am always up for a gastronomic challenge, but then if I am beaten I can always rely on our two faithful hungry hounds to hide the evidence.
